Rusyn Villages Under Dukla Yet another site I created, in my head. (One of these days I'll get something on there.) My Rusyn roots are from this region and I'm a man on a mission to promote the history & culture of the immediate area.
EurasiaHealth This is what I USED TO do to earn my keep. It's not all it could have been but I'm rather proud of it.
STUFF I'M ALL ABOUT
The New Rusyn Times A publication I founded (1994), edit, and pretty much write. The circulation is about 1,600 paid copies, so people kinda like it :)
South Park Can't wait for the next episode to see what new perverted and cringe-worthy hilarity they can come up with.
SerenĨa A hot Lemko Rusyn youth band. They play traditional and innovative new Rusyn music. You can listen to them here.
Gogol Bordello I saw this band at DC's Black Cat in Feb '05 and was just blown away. (See my blog post from 3/28/05 to hear about it.)
DC: THE PLACE TO BE THIS CENTURY
DC Independent Media Center I don't agree with all that much that goes up here, but there's a lot of shocking things that you really don't hear about thru the mainstream "corporate" media. (I found this out with my own eyes on Inauguration Day 2005.) Good social justice stuff & equal rights stuff here, though.
Reel Affirmations One of the things I look forward to every fall (even though I can't stand fall). I like to catch as many flicks at this fest as I can, despite the fact that there's always a few clunkers in with the good stuff.
Washington Blade Actually a decent newspaper, it's been delivered to my building every Friday for a couple years now (so ya know I'm pretty much in the ghetto now). Important info and a lot of self-serving editorials, but overall it's a must-read. And don't miss "Bitch session".
Metro Weekly More fun to read than the Blade, and doesn't take itself as seriously. It's more like a lifestyle magazine than a newspaper. Always worth a read: "Hearsay" for all the S&BS reports (mercifully, I'll never make this column), "Soundwaves" for reports from the club music scene, and of course scoping out "Scene" for people I know is a good waste of time (really, I hardly know anyone, and I've only appeared in it once, from afar).
HOT SPOTS
Town Danceboutique At last, a gaygaygay warehouse dance club, easy to get to, good scene.
Halo Stylish, low-key atmosphere and light on the attitude. Friendly staff. Neighborhood g(a/u)ys. Another jewel in the crown of my neighborhood.
ISSUES Never let it be said that I'm a man without opinions. (Many of them quite unpopular!) Here's some of the more controversial and/or provocative.
Freedom to Marry I don't think the Church should be required to marry anyone they don't wish to enter into marriage. Where the (secular American) state's concerned, though, equality should be the order of the day.
PLAGAL Martyrs for the cause of defending life at its most fragile state and, in many cases, life at its most unwanted and despised. Many in the pro-life community would rather this group not show up, not participate. Many in the gay community treat them as pariahs. PLAGAL has the guts to hang in there, and they are making a difference.
Andrew Sullivan The only pundit I read regularly. I agree with a lot of his positions, but lately he pisses me off as much as he makes me cheer. Still, I look up to him and recommend him to others, if only to be exposed to an intellectually-informed challenge to the party line.
